The Rewrite Supercycle | The founding piece (free) is here. Earlier issues established the thesis and the three-layer framework. This issue hands you the verifiable signal that sorts winners from laggards before the P&L does.

Aaron Levie runs a public software company and just told you the AI conversation you are having is fake.

Not the technology. The conversation.

Speaking on CXOTalk this week, the Box CEO argued that most enterprise AI talk is “masking an IT architecture conversation or a data architecture conversation” Aaron @ 26:39. The model you license, the strategy you announce, the budget you approve, none of it predicts what you get from agents.

One thing does. And you can read it from the outside.

This series has argued the rewrite does not hit software evenly. It splits the field. The companies that rebuild their architecture re-rate, and the ones that bolt AI onto legacy stacks get displaced.

The hard part was always telling them apart before the P&L proved it.

Levie just named the tell. Data architecture, the harness underneath the agent, is the rebuild made visible. And the SaaS tape is already pricing it.

  • Coding agents work because code comes with a harness (the tests, tools, and permissions that wrap a raw model into a working agent). Knowledge work has none, so the gap is structural, not a model problem.

  • The predictor of AI productivity is the IT and data stack, not the model or the budget. “Show me your IT stack, I’ll show you what you’ll get from agents.”

  • The harness is now a product. Platforms that ship a permissioned, agent-ready data layer (Box, Snowflake, Salesforce-via-MCP) sit on the right side. Pure-narrative incumbents fund the bridge themselves.

  • The tape is already sorting on it: Wix at 1x revenue, Adobe at 8x cash flow with a CFO exit, the BVP Emerging Cloud index down 44% over five years against the SOX up 45-50% YTD.

Paid subscribers read on for Podcast Alpha’s full IT-stack diagnostic, the forward-deployed-engineer role that builds the harness, and the SaaS scorecard already sorting Wix, Adobe, and the Emerging Cloud index.
